NEW YORK, NY (March 17, 2021)—With the introduction of their budget proposals, the New York State Assembly and Senate have, once again, demonstrated their ongoing commitment to increasing state funding to protect and enhance New York’s precious natural resources. Budgets are statements of value, and the Open Space Institute applauds each house for establishing the environment and land protection as funding priorities.

We welcome with great enthusiasm the Assembly’s $100 million increase for the Environmental Protection Fund, including additional support for land acquisition. In addition, we commend the Senate’s inclusion of language reauthorizing the Environmental Bond Act to provide $3 billion to protect clean water, expand open space, and address climate change.

As the April 1 deadline draws closer, we look forward to working with the legislature to advance these impressive proposals, and realizing a renewed and expanded commitment to environmental funding.
