Year-in-Review: 2019 Success Stories

For more than four decades, OSI has been protecting land for clean water, clean air, and places to bike and hike.

The year-end provides us the opportunity to look back at our 2019 conservation achievements and reflect on what we have accomplished to sustain and improve lives. As the year draws to a close, OSI is on the way to protecting nearly 35,000 acres in New York, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia – and beyond. This work translates into big accomplishments, including:

The River-to-Ridge Trail has welcomed more than 104,000 visitors since OSI officially opened it one year ago.

  • protection of land that stores three million metrics tons of carbon – equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 2.3 million cars;
  • anticipated addition of more than 8,500 acres to 10 New York State Parks and Forests – plus added protection for the New York City watershed;
  • habitat and watershed protection totaling more than 13,000 acres in Florida, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, alone;
  • finalizing our third Georgia project in just two years -- bringing our conservation total in the Peach State to nearly 20,000 acres.
  • five years of conservation in South Carolina, where OSI has conserved more than 15,000 acres, and counting!

Even a loss turned out to be a win, as OSI said a bittersweet goodbye to our dynamite colleague Erik Kulleseid, now Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
